The Directory of Programs and Services for Persons with Disabilities
in Nova Scotia was compiled by the Nova Scotia Disabled Persons Commission.
There are a number of key programs and services of benefit to persons
with disabilities in Nova Scotia and is pleased to provide this program
directory and contact/mailing list.
Training
Resource Network
The TRC has conducted many presentations, demonstrations, workshops and
inservices. Consultants have facilitated teaching and learning sessions,
collaborated through consultations, assessments and networking while providing
extensive resource and reference materials. An assistive technology loan
program has also allowed consumers and professionals to move towards a
better "planning and decision making" process through "best
practices" that encourages appropriate, functional and cost effective
technology interventions.
Disability Management Edge
To provide the tools and information required to reduce the human, social
and economic cost of
disability to workers, employers and society. Disability Management Edge
offers a variety of information tools and services designed to help support
and enhance workplace-based integration
programs.
WORKinc.
WORKinc mission is to facilitate communication and provide resources
and information to enhance equitable and meaningful employment of people

NS Net
Linking Citizens in Nova Scotia to Resources that Promote Active Healthy
Independent Living in our Communities. The Community Organization Network
represents community organizations in Nova Scotia that serve citizens
of all ages facing disability and health challenges. This project is supported
by the Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre and its Community Support
Services program. The Technical Resource Centre provides technical support
in developing content and managing this web site services for not-for-profit
community organizations.

CNIB services are designed to help blind and visually impaired people adjust to
loss of sight, enabling them to live independently. Any person who is experiencing
functional visual difficulties is eligible for CNIB services.

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) exists to promote the mental
health of all people and to serve mental health consumers, their families
and friends. They run programs that assists employment, housing, early

with mental illness, stress reduction workshops and public education campaigns
for the community.

The Learning Disabilities Association of Canada is dedicated to advance
the education, employment, social development, legal rights and general
well-being of people with learning disabilities.
Canadian Association for Community Living
The Canadian Association for Community Living is Canada's national association
dedicated to promoting the participation of people with intellectual disabilities
in all aspects community life.
Disabled Peoples' International
The purpose of Disabled Peoples' International (DPI) is to promote the
Human Rights of People with Disabilities through full participation, equalization
of opportunity and development. DPI is a grassroot, cross-disability network
with member organizations in over 158 countries, over half of which are
in the developing world.
Administration
on Developmental Disabilities - American
The Administration on Developmental Disabilities ensures that individuals
with developmental disabilities and their families participate in the
design of and have access to culturally competent services, supports,
and other assistance and opportunities that promotes independence, productivity,
and integration and inclusion into the community.
National Council on Disability
- American
The National Council on Disability's overall purpose is to promote policies,
programs, practices, and procedures that guarantee equal opportunity for
all individuals with disabilities, regardless of the nature or severity
of the disability; and to empower individuals with disabilities to achieve
economic self-sufficiency, independent living, and inclusion and integration
into all aspects of society.
Community ACCESS-Ability
The Community ACCESS-ability Program is one way the Government of Nova Scotia
is demonstrating its commitment to equal opportunity and improving access
to community facilities and venues for persons with disabilities. Under
this program, funds are available for cost shared grants to community groups
for accessibility related capital improvements.
Employment Incentive Program (EIP) - Nova Scotia Workers' Compensation
Board
Using a variety of technical and financial incentives, EIP is designed
to help employers stay competitive, while giving workers who have been
injured on the job a chance to once again make a productive contribution
to their lives, their families and their province.
On-the-Job Training - Nova Scotia Workers' Compensation Board
The WCB's strategy is to provide an effective administration in order
to co-ordinate all partners in the workers' compensation system to focus
their efforts on building a healthy, working Nova Scotia. The mission
is to assist injured workers and their employers by providing timely medical
and rehabilitative support to facilitate the efforts of injured workers
to return to work; and to provide appropriate compensation for work-related
disabilities.
Disability Database - Statistics Canada
Statistics Canada maintains records on the prevalence of disability in
Canada and the impact of disability on the life of Canadians with disabilities.
Topics included in these records are: information on the existence, nature
and severity of disability; the use of technical aids and services; data
on persons with disabilities such as demographic, household, labour force,
employment, education, transportation, and income.
